Junior becomes Senior, III becomes Junior, IV becomes III, and so on. Of course, most people forget this, and especially if the family line becomes famous, it becomes a pain to change the names accordingly, so in recent times (the last 50 years), this tradition is largely ignored. So, the current Senator, John Sidney McCain III, should be Senior, and his son should be Junior, but because the name is famous, it has been frozen.
